Boston Manufacturing Company was organized in 1813 (during the
War of 1812) by
Francis Cabot Lowell in partnership with family members and colleagues (often referred to as
The Boston Associates). It was built in 1814 at
Waltham, Massachusetts and was the first integrated
textile mill in the United States. Operated by
waterpower from the
Charles River the mill converted bales of raw cotton into bolts of cloth. This company became the model for textile mills built in
Lowell, Massachusetts and
Manchester, New Hampshire. Boston Manufacturing Company closed in 1930.
